Home Repair

Are you in need of critical repair for your home, but don’t know where to start? Each year, Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity applies for grant funds to support home repair requests for homeowners with a modest or low-income, as well as grants for active duty military and veteran homeowners.

Please read the entirety of the information on this page before moving forward.

If you have questions regarding qualifications, or wish to be added to one of our waiting lists, please contact:

Contractors: If you have a work portfolio and references, please reach out to our Home Repair Manager for consideration to be added to our contractor list.

Emergency home repair: At this time, we do not have an emergency home repair program. We recommend reaching out to Michigan 211 for emergency needs.

Saginaw County residents: The waiting list is closed unless you are active duty military or have served in the armed forces.

Shiawassee County residents: The waiting list is open. You will need to provide your address at the time of request for repairs to be added to the waiting list. Please note: we are currently not serving homeowners in trailer parks. If you live in a trailer, the trailer must be on property you own and the wheels must be removed.

Veterans and Active Duty Military: You will need to submit your DD214 at the time of request for repairs to be placed on a waiting list.

Repairs for Shiawassee county residents, veterans, and active duty military may include:
– Replacement of roof, furnace, water heater, or central air conditioner
– Adding additional insulation to walls, attic, or crawl space
– ADA modifications such as low-step shower, taller toilet, roll under vanity, or exterior house ramp
– NOTE: Windows, siding, and doors are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Home Repair Manager

Current Home Repair Programs

Spring Grant
Applicants may qualify for up to $15,000 of grant assistance. Applicants are selected from the waitlist list based on need, qualification to the grant, and willingness to partner. This grant may only be received once every five (5) years.

Special Funding Grants
Grant dollars are sometimes received from private funders. When this type of funding becomes available, applicants are selected from the waiting list that fit the criteria for that particular funder.

Habitat Michigan Funding
Specific to veterans, this funding is available throughout the year for up to $20,000. The veteran cannot be dishonorably discharged, and veterans must meet all qualifications, including providing a DD214.

Furnace Replacement
If your furnace has been tagged for carbon monoxide leaks, or if the heat exchanger has cracked – you may qualify for a replacement. Qualifications for this program vary and it is best to contact the Home Repair Manager for more information.

    Qualifications

Each program has a unique process. Please be patient as we navigate the process together.

All programs require applicants pay a $250 participation fee, contribute sweaty equity, complete a home assessment, and a willingness to request bids and allow tests to run that are required on the property. More information regarding these requirements will be provided at orientation.

Additional qualifications include, but are not limited to:
    – Proof of ownership
    – Current on property taxes
    – Homeowners’ insurance
    – Current utility statement from Consumers Energy
    – Mortgage statement(s)
    – Proof of household income (see below)
    – Willingness to partner

Household gross income must fall within program parameters, and may include, but is not limited to: wages, social security, cash assistance, veterans pay, retirement earnings, dividends, interest, assets, state assistance, and self-employment.

    Closed Programs

MSHDA MI-HOPE and MICH grants have been closed, and we will not be serving additional families with this program.

CHILL with Bridgeport Township – all families have been selected and no additional families will be added to this grant program.

U.S. Congressional Appropriations Committee / Dan Kildee grant funds – all participants have been selected. If additional funds are awarded, families will be selected from the waiting list.

Repairs are considered and scored by a hierarchy of health and safety needs that are most important to your well-being vs. curb appeal. Every Home Repair program is subject to change based on staffing, available grant funding, and qualification changes. Participation fee applies to each grant.
